Ever imagined having a career in finance? With hundreds of roles available in Greater Manchester, a career in finance could set you up with a career journey for life.
Today we’re speaking with Ranvir Singh, all about his current role as an Investment Manager, where he handles activities related to financial planning, investing and managing a portfolio for his clients. Take it away, Ranvir!
Describe what a “day in the life” of your job entails for us, Ranvir?
First thing up is normally an informal meeting with the director to discuss the progress of deals and upcoming pipeline - plus any housekeeping that has come up. We normally field a number of internal enquiries for support from the wider company or other external stakeholders in Greater Manchester.
The rest of the day will either be attending an event where I will be speaking to early-stage founders about raising capital or individual meetings with founders to discuss investment needs and whether our bosses are interested in investing.
Sometimes there can be events to attend in the investment ecosystem which start at 5 or 6pm. If so, I will go for an hour before getting home.
Has AI impacted your role or your industry?
Certainly - the advent of AI has brought a plethora of new businesses that are seeking to utilise the technology to develop disruptive solutions to their industry. AI is expensive to fund - and so these businesses have a real need for early-stage capital.
What made you want to work in the job you’re in now?
I have always been involved with investment in one way or another. I started my career as an equity trader in the London before moving and setting up my own company which I exited successfully after 10 years. From there I was an angel investor (an individual who invests personal money in early-stage companies) and did some advisory work for Innovate UK before becoming an investment manager in Venture Capitalism at GC Angels.
What’s your favourite thing about your job?
To be able to 'spot' a great business in its infancy and use my experience to make a successful investment decision is a buzz in itself! But more than this - as a former founder - it gives me great satisfaction to work alongside new young (business) founders and help them with capital and further advice to create a success.
