A Day in the Life of a Construction Site Manager - Meet Siobhon!

  • Published: Thursday, March 7, 2024

Learn more below about how Siobhon began her career in construction, and what a normal day in the life looks like for her as a Construction Site Manager at Morgan Sindall, in her own words:

"I started my career in the construction industry as a document controller/site secretary.  I was working for a smaller contractor and often the Site Engineer would need help setting out. So, I started getting more and more involved in the on-site activities, quickly realising I enjoyed it and was quite good at it. It was here I started my degree programme going to the University of Salford one day a week.

I then moved to work for a tier one contractor, where there was a more structured approach to training.  I started out looking after smaller sections of work with the support of more senior members of the team.  I moved on to working on smaller sites with more responsibility over the whole project, eventually becoming the project lead.  I have worked on a variety of projects, from new build schools and hospitals, Grade II listed residential refurbishments to working within a World UNESCO Heritage Site. They have all brought different challenges, and skills, some you use regularly and some just that once for that particular project.

My responsibilities on site include:

  • Reviewing and challenging design information
  • Programming and scheduling
  • Labour resourcing works
  • Managing safety, health and environmental elements on site and beyond
  • Monitoring the quality of installations on site and ensuring all elements comply with contract specifications
  • Understanding the contract
  • Monitoring financial expenditure
  • Mentoring and training junior members of staff

My role involves a lot of problem solving and relationship building. No day is the same and all projects, despite their similarities, will be different."

Following these experiences, Siobhon’s career continued, and she now has advanced, and  has moved to working as a Senior Site Manager. Are you looking to get started in your own career in Construction?
